What Are All The Phases Of The Moon

It s probably easiest to understand the moon cycle in this order. Seven days after new moon the moon is in first quarter. Other times the moon seems to disappear entirely. When we see a portion of the moon shadowed and invisible it is not because of the earth s shadow but because the dark portion of the moon is the half that is turned away from the sun.

The last quarter moon or a half moon is when half of the lit portion of the moon is visible after the waning gibbous phase. As shown in the above diagram the new moon occurs when the moon is positioned between the earth and sun. The center ring shows the moon as it revolves around the earth as seen from above the north pole. The moon has phases the wanes waxes and even sometimes we can t even see the moon during its phase.

We see the waxing crescent phase as a thin crescent opening to the left. We see the first quarter phase as a half moon. There are four primary moon phases and four intermediate phases. This phase is called a new moon.

We cannot see the moon when it is a new moon. As the bright parts of the moon appear to change shape during the month each stage of the change is called a phase and each phase carries its own name. A waning crescent moon is when the moon looks like a crescent and the crescent decreases wanes in size from one day. There are four principal lunar phases.

A new moon is usually not visible to the naked eye as only the unlit portion of the moon is exposed. The 8 moon phases in order are new moon waxing crescent first quarter waxing gibbous full moon waning gibbous last quarter and finally waning crescent. The eight moon phases. There are eight phases of the moon which repeat every 29 5 days. After first quarter the moon appears to grow into a gibbous shape. This phase occurs when the moon is situated directly between the sun and the earth. A waning gibbous moon occurs when more than half of the lit portion of the moon can be seen and the shape decreases wanes in size from one day to the next.

Lunar phases on the other hand are caused by the position of the moon in relation to the sun. New moon and full moon first quarter and third quarter and the phases in between. The waning gibbous phase occurs between the full moon and third quarter phases.
