There are eight distinct moon phases name.
New moon waxing crescent first quarter waxing gibbous full moon waning gibbous last quarter and waning crescent. But in fact the other side of the moon is illuminate and not seen by us. The new moon phase of the lunar cycle happens when the sun moon and earth are located in a straight line with the moon between the earth and the sun. New moon first quarter full moon third or last quarter waxing and waning crescent moon.
This phase is called a new moon. We see the first quarter phase as a half moon. When is the next full moon. There are four primary moon phases and four intermediate phases.
