Mitosis and meiosis are nuclear division processes that occur during cell division.
Here we investigate the key differences and similarities between the two processes. Meiosis is a type of cellular reproduction in which the number of chromosomes are reduced by half through the separation of homologous chromosomes producing two haploid cells. The meiosis process includes two divisions that produce four haploid cells. This process creates sex cells only.
The main difference between the two cycles is that the mitotic cycle lasts for more than two hours while the meiotic cycle may take days up to weeks to produce sex cells in animals because it involves meiosis 1 and then meiosis 2. The result is two identical daughter cells. Mitosis is a core process that replicates all of its content including duplication of its chromosomes. Mitosis is a critical process to life and hence this is controlled by several genes.
Meiosis occurs in humans animals plants and fungi to produce a new gene after homologs pair. To put it straight mitosis creates new body cells whereas meiosis generates sperm and egg cells. Hence this is the functional difference between mitosis and meiosis. Meiosis on the other hand allows reproductive cells to divide twice to produce four non identical daughter cells each having half the genetic material of the parent cell.

However during meiosis there are two cell divisions and the cell goes through each phase twice so there s prophase i prophase ii etc. Mitosis involves the division of body cells while meiosis involves the division of sex cells.
