If the wound cannot be surgically closed your veterinarian may apply a protective bandage if this is possible. Run cool water on the wound for 5 10 minutes once or twice a day. After cleaning it and making sure your pet hasn t gotten anything in the wound apply a small amount of antibiotic ointment to promote healing and provide a barrier. Two to three times a day clean away debris if necessary and apply the antiseptic and ointment until the skin is healed.
