The advent wreath traditionally holds four candles which are lit one at a time on each of the four sundays of the advent season. Themes are tied to the meaning of each candle. I suggest that there is a significant symbolism of each advent candle with the candles representing four parts of god s total plan of redemption. A more modern tradition is to place a white candle in the center of the wreath.
The most common advent candle tradition however involves four candles around the wreath. To unite people and bring them closer to god. The lighting of the candles is therefore a form of countdown to christmas. Each candle represents 1 000 years.
If there is a fifth candle it represents christ and should be lit on christmas day. The four candles remind us of god s grace.
