Turtle species that lack forceful bites have no defense besides retracting into their shells. It is a common thought that a turtle s shell is part of its skelatal system this is wrong. Turtles and tortoises can never leave their shells so they can never change to a new one. But like someone else answered if you re looking for the turtle but just so happens to be lucky enough to be born without a shell then i have not heard of that in existence myself.
The shell of a turtle acts as its primary way of defending from predators. Can turtles change their shells. But if that is the case and you heard of a cool story then maybe you can show us or go out and find it somewhere else and come back and post picture because now you have me really interested. If you take that away all turtles will basically be left defenceless.
Turtles without a shell look like a big blob because under that big hard shell it is just mosh. Turtles have either a leathery cover to their cartilage shells or they have scales or scutes made from keratin that cover their bony shells. This makes docile varieties popular pets though they are not without some health risks. A turtle without a shell. Even if somehow turtles managed to keep their proper shape without a shell they would be basically left defenceless. With their powerful beak like jaws the pests are able to bite off fingers and toes.
They do not shed the shell though some turtles may shed old scutes as new ones form. Without a shell a turtle will look like a melted jello.
