Some signs of a broken kneecap may include pain swelling and difficulty when trying to extend the knee.

The main differential diagnosis is bi partite patella which is a congenital malformation of the knee cap where one of the growth centres of the knee cap doesn t fully fuse with the rest of the bone and the two pieces are joined by cartilage. Symptoms of a broken kneecap fracture are swelling and pain especially when moving the knee back and forth.

Occasionally it can dislocate after awkward twisting usually in sporting activities.
