As mentioned earlier water moccasins are often mistaken for other snakes. Their heads are also much larger than the normal water snake and they have a diamond like shape that almost seems like a large block. The water moccasin is a venomous snake a species of pit viper native to the southeastern united states. The quick and easy way to identify a water moccasin is to look for its wedge shaped blocky head from above as in a boat you can t see its eyes check for the heat sensing slits beneath and between its eyes and nose and note its olive dark tan dark brown or an almost black body thick and python like in its girth especially in the middle before it tapers to a long thin tip. Older adults are often much darker almost solid black. The body of this young venomous water moccasin is very thick for its length and has a relatively short thick tail.
Its coloration varies but includes olive banded brown and black. The water moccasin looks a lot like the northern water snake and the lake erie water snake. The water moccasin has a brownish color but this will also go darker as they age more. Water moccasin snake s neck is narrower than the head.

A full grown water moccasin can be about 4 to 6 feet long. Other snakes are not true cottonmouths because they lack the interior flesh of their mouths that give cottonmouths their name. And a dangerous bite. But instances of these snakes biting humans are very rare.
As an adult it is large and capable of delivering a painful and potentially fatal bite. The water moccasin is a larger snake however. Its large body is darkly colored and it lives around water and wet places. They tend to attack when they feel in danger or threatened.
The water moccasin is a species of pit viper that features a muscular stocky body between 2 and 4 feet in length and a large triangular head. These snakes have a triangular shaped head which can be seen in the top left picture. They are known for their thick bodies and shorter tails compared to the slender water snake.
