Solids have a definite shape while liquid and gases diffuse to fill the available volume completely and do not have a definite shape.
Matter that can change both shape and volume is called a gas. Matter that feels wet and maintains its volume but not its shape is called a liquid. It describes the arrangement movement and energy of particles in a substance. Liquids do not have a definite shape.
The molecules of a liquid are packed relatively close together. The level of energy is highest in gases medium in liquid and lowest in solids. A liquid on the other hand has volume but no exact shape taking the shape of its container. Before we look at why things are called solids liquids or gases we need to know more about matter.
Thus there is no definite volume. Along with gas and plasma solid and liquid are two of the basic forms of matter. Highly strong intermolecular forces between the molecules leads to a definite volume in solids. Water is the only common substance that is naturally found as a solid liquid or gas. Solids liquids and gases are known as states of matter. Solids have a definite shape to them. The compression of solids is difficult liquids are nearly incompressible but gases can be easily compressed.
Solids and liquids have particles that are fairly close to one another and are thus called condensed phases to distinguish them from gases density. From the above discussion it is concluded that solid is a rigid state of matter with specific shape and volume while liquid is a flowing substance without any specific shape but has specific volume whereas gas has freely moving particles without any specific shape and volume. Matter that feels hard and maintains a fixed shape is called a solid. Consequently liquids are much denser than gases.
