The older son represented the pharisees and the teachers of the law.
In this story the man s son recklessly and wastefully spends his inheritance. Prodigal means being wastefully extravagant. We are the prodigal son. In the context of this famous parable the prodigal son has also come to mean someone who is spiritually lost and someone who has returned after an absence.
In telling the story jesus identifies himself with god in his loving attitude to the lost. And he arose and came to his father. We pay the most attention to the prodigal son because he is the character we most easily relate to but the parable is not about him or the older brother the message contained within this story is primarily about the fathers love for both of his sons. Not only should the response be acceptance but it should also encompass complete jubilation for what god has done.
He had a loving father a good home provision a future and an inheritance but he traded it all in for temporal pleasures. Grace is most often defined as unmerited or unearned favor. The parable of the prodigal son also known as the parable of the two brothers lost son loving father or of the forgiving father is one of the parables of jesus in the bible appearing in luke 15 11 32. Jesus shares the parable with his disciples the pharisees and others. As he did every day the father walked from his home to the small hill where he could look down the road and see for several miles. The younger son the progidal represented the tax collectors and sinners.
The younger son asks for his portion of inheritance from his father who. He always thought and hoped that he would see a familiar figure heading his way. In the story a father has two sons. But the parable of the prodigal son is not really about the prodigal son it is not about the elder brother.
A key lesson of the parable of the prodigal son is that there is always hope for reconciliation.
