Before looking at differences it s important to know that apes and monkeys are both primates.

There are definite differences between the two though. New world monkeys are small and live most of their lives out in trees with many using a tail as a sort of fifth limb old world monkeys and apes are usually larger than new world monkeys. Whereas most monkey species have long flexible tails on them the ape family has no visible tail. Their bodies are different in other ways too.

The main difference between monkey and ape is that monkeys have a tail whereas apes do not have a tail. Apes do not have tails and monkeys do apes have rounded nasal openings and monkeys have slanted nasal openings monkeys have web feet and apes do not and monkeys are generally smaller. While no apes have tails only vestigial ones like humans have the appearance and usefulness of a tail in an old world monkey depends on its environment.

Apes have no tail. Monkeys are generally smaller and narrow chested while apes are larger and have broad chests and shoulder joints that allow them to swing through trees while some monkeys also have this ability most of them are built for running across branches rather than swinging. Some of the differences in monkeys and apes are. With only a couple of exceptions all 260 species of monkeys have tails but no apes have tails.

While apes and monkeys are both primates and are part of the same primate suborder there are lots of differences between them there are also lots of other sorts of primates. For much of history people have used the terms monkey and ape interchangeably. The size of the brain mental capabilities and the lifespan of monkey and ape may also possess significant differences. The order of primates is characterized by animals with forward facing eyes and highly flexible arms.

In fact many people today will refer to apes as monkeys and vice versa. The distinction between different primate groups is based on physical characteristics and evolutionary ancestry.
