In hip hop mixtapes were originally a platform for djs to showcase rappers and then later an avenue for rappers to release usually non original music independently and often times for free.
Hopefully the short version clears it up quickly for you but if not keep reading as i go into more detail as to what i define a mixtape and album. These days the mixtape is bigger than rap it is now any project that is too long to be called an ep and too risky to be called an album. Album an album is usually a more professional sounding release have several songs on it. At this point the aesthetic difference between a mixtape and an album is slight. A mixtape on the other hand can be an album or ep in terms of length but it is not sold unless on hard copy to cover the costs of putting the music on disc. Mixtapes in today s music industry are basically a compilation of songs whereas an album is typically a higher quality more structured story.
Mixtapes move a rapper s career forward and they can do that without selling a single copy. In the last few years ever since it became free and easy to distribute them online mixtapes have grown into. Mixtapes are often available to download for free rather than being sold in stores. It can never be sold.
