The difference between an element and a compound is that an element is a substance made of same type of atoms whereas a compound is made of different elements in definite proportions. A compound is a substance formed when two or more elements chemically react with each other to form chemical bonds between their atoms. Elements are differentiated by their respective atomic numbers whereas compounds are differentiated by their respective fixed ratio of various elements that are arranged in a definite manner. Elements are pure substances which consist of only a single type of atom. Compounds can be classified as pure substances because each element that formed it is in fixed proportions.

The properties of an element often change completely when they are part of a compound. Simply put the difference between elements and compounds is that elements are made of only one thing but compounds are made of more than one thing. Most noteworthy the main difference between element and compound is that the former comprises of same types of atoms while the later comprises of different elements.
