People make raised beds and lasagna beds and start by putting cardboard or newspaper on the bottom.

Then the next thing is to get some thick substances like landscape fabric cardboard or some newspaper on the bottom of the raised bed. Adding a protective layer at the bottom of your raised bed can help to prevent weeds from growing. Always use gopher wire on the bottom of your raised bed to keep pests out of your garden bed.
In these raised beds i put 2 inches of lava rock on the bottom for drainage landscaping fabric old logs and sticks comprise the bottom half.
