Thanks to the spanish conquistadors who overtook the city in 1521 led by hernán cortés misinformation about tenochtitlan and its inhabitants has been around for 500 years. The aztec empire was one of the most important pre columbian empires in the american continent. It was founded in 1325 and served as the capital until the aztecs were conquered by spanish conquistador hernan cortes in 1520.

Despite the initial conception of the empire as an alliance of three self governed city states tenochtitlan quickly became dominant militarily.
