Sleeping with a bent elbow compresses the ulnar nerve. Carpal tunnel syndrome and your sleeping position can cause you to wake up with numbness in one or both hands and arms. More often than not complaints about numbness while sleeping are caused mainly from sleeping in positions that cut off blood circulation. Poor blood circulation due to inappropriate body positions can cause numbness while sleeping.

However there are different reasons causing this pressure that results in one or both of your arms or hands to be numb when you wake up. Extended pressure on the ulnar nerve in your arm interferes with the function of the nerve and makes the hand numb. The most common reason why your hands and arms fall asleep while you re sleeping is pressure on a nerve in your arm.
