The snails first enter your fish tank from live plants or are scooped up with new fish. Just like in an aquarium snails will feed themselves in a pond well stocked with vegetation and algae. Snails act as natural tank cleaners. In other words if you have pest snails in your fish tank it means you either have too much algae in the tank or are overfeeding your fish.
Some good plant choices for your pond snails include water hyacinth water lettuce bladderworts duckweeds and anacharis. As you can imagine this makes it an excellent choice for removing unwanted snails from a tank. The snails then feed off excess algae in the tank or leftover food at the bottom of the tank.
