What do live sand dollars look like.
Along with those hairs are tube feet which look like fur to me too heehee which is actually how the sand dollar breathes. The living creatures are much darker usually somewhere between brown and purple. There are some california beaches that are great for picking up sand dollars. I went to the beach and found a brownish sand dollar with hair on it.
These flat sea urchins have thousands of purple spines and tube feet that help them catch food absorb oxygen from the water and move around. Like the sea urchins sand dollars also have tiny structures called pedicellariae which look like jaws on stalks. Sand dollars are closely related to starfish. Live sand dollars don t look like those perfectly white shells you see in gift shops.

If it s live enjoy looking at it a moment then throw it back. Their appearance is similar to that of a large coin or a silver dollar found in the sand hence the name. Give it a chance to live. They may also be used to collect tiny food particles.
The test is usually white or grayish white with a star shaped marking in its center. The common name for these animals comes from their likeness to silver dollars. Sand dollars before they re harvested for souvenirs are living organisms that look entirely different. They re dark gray or purple and have an outer layer made up of tiny spines all over that.
