What Does A Live Sand Dollar Look Like

Sand dollars have short spines covered in cilia tiny hairs so it can move along the sand and grasses. A sand dollar has a characteristic 5 petal design on its back produced by sets of large pores. Sand dollars like all members of the order clypeasteroida possess a rigid skeleton called a test the test consists of calcium carbonate plates arranged in a fivefold symmetric pattern.

What do live sand dollars look like.

Along with those hairs are tube feet which look like fur to me too heehee which is actually how the sand dollar breathes. The living creatures are much darker usually somewhere between brown and purple. There are some california beaches that are great for picking up sand dollars. I went to the beach and found a brownish sand dollar with hair on it.

These flat sea urchins have thousands of purple spines and tube feet that help them catch food absorb oxygen from the water and move around. Like the sea urchins sand dollars also have tiny structures called pedicellariae which look like jaws on stalks. Sand dollars are closely related to starfish.
