Transverse waves have oscillations in many different directions but longitudinal waves have oscillations in only one direction.
The movement of the particle is along the direction of the wave. Sound waves are longitudinal waves. Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves with a wide range of properties and uses. It contains refractions and compressions.
The basic difference between transverse and longitudinal waves is that in transverse waves particles of waves move perpendicular in the direction of the wave while in longitudinal waves particles move horizontally in the direction of the wave. Transverse waves create oscillations that are normal to the direction of propagation but the longitudinal waves create oscillations that are parallel to the propagation of the wave. Consists of troughs and crests. Travels only in solids.
