A motel is targeted toward those travelling on the highway who want a break from their journey.
Hotels tend to be built for longer stays while motels are geared more for one or two night. The basic design of a hotel is significantly different for example the rooms normally face inward with doors opening to interior hallways. This is the main difference between hotel and motel. In layout and design hotels and motels vary.
They typically have staircases elevators and internal corridors leading to the rooms. The difference between hotel and motel lies in the type of services and facilities they offer. A hotel is targeted at all sorts of people such as business people travelers students etc. Hotels are fit for long stay whereas motels are not fit for long stay.
A motel is considered a type of hotel which is designed primarily for motorists. Motels usually have a one or two floor layout and visitors directly enter their rooms from the parking lot. Hundreds of rooms and multiple floors can be found in hotels. While hotels can offer a vacation with just their infrastructure motels offer basic accommodation to those traveling long distance or overnight.

Hotels serve a different purpose from motels and as such they tend to be located in or near cities or major holiday resorts. The difference between a hotel and a motel first and foremost there are many similarities between hotels and motels. Hotels are found in metropolitan areas while motels are found next to major and minor highways. Another main difference between a hotel and a motel is that a hotel is situated normally well within the town or the city.
