What Side Of The Tree Does Moss Grow On
Olivia Luz

Moss grows on the north side of trees where the sun doesn t shine on it.
While it doesn t occur exclusively on the north side of trees it s true that moss in the northern hemisphere tends to grow there. The sun dries out that side of the tree and doesn t give moss the environment it needs to grow. This means that moss does not always grow on the north side. On the other side of the equator the sun is mostly to the north which means that the north side of trees is hot and dry.
It s damp and shady which moss favours. And all of those can cast shadows on the south side of a tree not to mention the west or east sides as well. Southern hemisphere moss may prefer to be on the southern side of trees where it s also more shaded and damp. Moss can grow on any side of a tree.
Here in the uk this is the side of the trees that gets the least sunlight. In northern latitudes the north side of trees and rocks will generally have more moss on average than other sides though south side outcroppings are not unknown. Some moss will grow in the side with less sun and heat like the north side but dark forests with a very dense canopy can make the moss grow all around the tree however the moss will be it s thickest on the north side. The next time you re in the woods have a look around.
